Azure API Management Pricing 2026: Real Cost and Premium Tax
Every Azure API Management tier and price for 2026, what the Premium tax is, the hidden costs, and real cost scenarios from $7 to $50,000 a year.

TL;DR
Azure API Management pricing runs from $0 a month on the Consumption tier to about $2,800 a month for one Premium or Premium v2 unit in East US. Most production teams land on Standard v2 at about $700 a month.
The "Premium tax" is the jump you pay when you need one Premium-only feature, such as private networking inside your VNet, multi-region, availability zones or a self-hosted gateway. A hybrid setup with one on-premises gateway starts at about $3,045 a month.
On top of the tier price, budget for security, monitoring, extra units and environments. Azure API Management has no reserved-capacity discount.
On most Azure bills, API Management is one of the quiet lines. It costs the same every month. It rarely comes up at budget reviews, because the gateway works and the price hasn't moved since someone chose the tier.
On the Premium tier, that quiet line is about $2,800 a month per instance, before anything else is added. The tier was picked for a reason. The reason isn't usually written down next to the invoice.
So, a quick count. How many Azure API Management instances does your company run? You probably answered in a second.
Now the slower count. Open Azure Cost Management. Filter to API Management. List every instance and its tier. Next to each Premium instance, write the one thing only Premium gives you that it uses. VNet injection. A second region. Availability zones. A self-hosted gateway.
If nothing fits, leave the box empty and count them.
How much does Azure API Management cost in 2026?
Azure API Management costs between $0 and about $2,800 a month per unit in East US, depending on the tier. The Consumption tier charges only per call. Every other tier charges per unit, per hour, whether you use it or not. Prices below come from Azure's retail price list, checked on 8 October 2026, with monthly figures at 730 hours.
| Tier | Price per month (1 unit) | Each extra unit | Calls included | Overage | SLA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Consumption | $0 | Scales automatically | First 1M per subscription | $3.50 per 1M calls | 99.95% |
| Developer | $48 | Not available (1 unit max) | No limit | None | None (not for production) |
| Basic (classic) | $147 | $147 (2 units max) | No limit | None | 99.95% |
| Standard (classic) | $687 | $687 (4 units max) | No limit | None | 99.95% |
| Premium (classic) | $2,795 | $1,398 (50% of the first) | No limit | None | 99.95%, or 99.99% across zones or regions |
| Basic v2 | $150 | $150 (10 units max) | 10M | $3.00 per 1M calls | 99.95% |
| Standard v2 | $700 | $500 (10 units max) | 50M | $2.50 per 1M calls | 99.95% |
| Premium v2 | $2,800 | $1,400 (30 units max) | Unlimited | None | 99.95%, or 99.99% across zones |
Two more tiers sit outside this table:
- Isolated is still in preview. Azure's pricing page lists its price as "TBA" and asks you to call support.
- AI Gateway tier appears on the pricing page with "Pricing details are coming soon." Our guide to Azure AI Gateway pricing and token limits covers what you pay today.
Is there a free tier of Azure API Management?
There's no free tier, but there are three ways to pay little or nothing:
- Consumption includes the first 1 million calls per subscription each month at no charge.
- Developer costs about $48 a month and includes almost every feature, but has no SLA and isn't for production.
- Basic v2 created from Microsoft Foundry is free for up to 100,000 requests when you set it up as an AI gateway.
Do Azure API Management prices change by region?
Mostly no. East US, West Europe and Southeast Asia charge the same for Premium and Standard v2. A few regions cost more:
| Region | Tier | Price per month |
|---|---|---|
| East US, West Europe, Southeast Asia | Premium (classic) | $2,795 |
| Mexico Central | Premium (classic) | $3,075 |
| US Gov regions | Premium (classic) | $3,494 |
| Taiwan Northwest | Premium (classic) | $3,634 |
| Italy North, Sweden Central | Standard v2 | $913 |
| Germany North | Standard v2 | $1,138 |
| Southeast Asia | Consumption | $4.25 per 1M calls (vs $3.50 in East US) |
Check your own region in the Azure API Management pricing page before you budget.
How does Azure API Management pricing work?
You pay for units of gateway capacity by the hour, plus per-call fees on Consumption and above the v2 allowances. A unit is one slice of gateway capacity. You add units to handle more traffic, and on Premium you add them to more zones or regions for resilience.
Here's what goes on your bill:
- Units: Every tier except Consumption charges per unit per hour. Classic tiers have no call limits.
- Extra units: On Premium (classic and v2), each unit after the first costs 50% of the first. On Standard v2 an extra unit costs $500. On Basic v2 and the classic Basic and Standard tiers, extra units cost the full unit price.
- Calls: Consumption charges $3.50 per million calls after the first million, and bills each operation in a request as one call. Basic v2 and Standard v2 charge for calls above 10 million and 50 million a month.
- Self-hosted gateways: On classic Premium, each self-hosted gateway deployment costs about $250 a month, with unlimited replicas. On Developer, deployments are free but limited to one replica each.
- Workspaces: Premium includes the first five workspaces. After that, workspaces cost $100 per pack of five a month. A dedicated workspace gateway costs about $1,400 a month on Premium.
How does Azure APIM pricing differ between classic and v2 tiers?
Classic tiers charge only for units; v2 tiers include a call allowance and charge for calls above it. v2 tiers are faster to set up and cheaper to scale on Standard, but they lack some classic Premium features.
| Classic tiers | v2 tiers | |
|---|---|---|
| Per-call charges | None (except Consumption) | Above 10M (Basic v2) or 50M (Standard v2); none on Premium v2 |
| Multi-region | Premium only | Not available |
| Self-hosted gateway | Developer and Premium | Not available |
| VNet injection | Developer and Premium | Premium v2 |
| Outbound VNet integration | Developer and Premium | Standard v2 and Premium v2 |
| Upgrade path | No automated upgrade to v2 | — |
There's no automated move from classic to v2. Microsoft's documentation says you build a new v2 instance and migrate your configuration yourself.
What is the Azure APIM Premium tax?
The Azure APIM Premium tax is the price jump you pay when one feature you need exists only on a Premium tier. It takes your bill from about $700 a month on Standard v2 to $2,800 or more, even when the rest of Premium goes unused.
These features push you into Premium:
| Feature you need | Cheapest production tier | Approx. monthly floor (East US) |
|---|---|---|
| Outbound connection to private backends (VNet integration) | Standard v2 | $700 (no Premium needed) |
| APIM inside your own VNet (VNet injection) | Premium v2 | $2,800 |
| Availability zones with a 99.99% SLA | Premium v2 or Premium, with units in 2+ zones | About $4,200 (2 units) |
| More than one Azure region | Premium (classic) | $2,795 plus $1,398 per extra unit |
| Gateways on-premises or in other clouds | Premium (classic) | About $3,045 (1 unit + 1 gateway) |
| Isolated runtime per team (workspace gateway) | Premium or Premium v2 | $2,800 plus about $1,400 per gateway |
| No per-call fees above 50M calls | Premium v2 or classic tiers | $2,800 (Premium v2) |
Read the first row closely. Many teams believe they need Premium for "VNet support". If your gateway only needs to reach private backends, Standard v2's outbound VNet integration covers it for $700. You need Premium only when APIM itself must sit inside your VNet with no public endpoint.
Do you need Premium v2 or classic Premium?
- Choose Premium v2 if you need VNet injection or availability zones in one region. It costs about the same as classic Premium and has no call fees.
- Choose classic Premium if you need more than one region or self-hosted gateways. Premium v2 offers neither, as of October 2026.
Does a self-hosted gateway cost $3,700?
No, not anymore. A 2021 Reddit post priced Premium plus one self-hosted gateway at $3,700 a month, and the figure still circulates. At today's East US prices, the same setup costs about $3,045: $2,795 for one Premium unit plus $250 for one gateway deployment. You also pay for the servers or Kubernetes cluster the gateway runs on.
What are the hidden costs of Azure API Management?
The tier price covers the gateway, not everything around it. Most production setups also pay for security, monitoring, caching and extra environments. Some of these have public prices; others depend on your traffic.
| Cost | When you need it | Price (East US, Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Defender for APIs | Threat detection for APIs (OWASP API Top 10) | From $200 a month for up to 1M calls, up to $50,000 a month for 1B calls, per subscription |
| Web application firewall | Azure Front Door or Application Gateway in front of APIM | Billed by those services |
| Logging | Log Analytics and Application Insights | Billed per GB of data |
| External cache | Azure Managed Redis for larger caches or AI semantic caching | Billed by the cache service |
| API Center | Company-wide API catalog | About $699 a month on Standard, but free with APIM Standard, Standard v2, Premium or Premium v2 |
| Extra workspaces | More than five teams on Premium | $100 per five workspaces a month |
| Non-production environments | Separate dev and test instances | From $48 a month each (Developer) |
| Integration services | Logic Apps, Functions, Service Bus | Billed per use |
| Data transfer | Traffic leaving Azure | Standard Azure bandwidth rates |
| Self-hosted gateway hosting | Your servers or Kubernetes | Your infrastructure cost |
Can you buy Azure API Management with reservations or a savings plan?
No. Azure API Management isn't eligible for Azure Reservations or the Azure savings plan for compute, as of October 2026. Microsoft's savings plan list covers services such as Virtual Machines, App Service and Container Apps, but not API Management. Your only routes to a lower price are enterprise agreement discounts and choosing the right tier.
What does Azure APIM cost in real scenarios?
Most teams pay between $150 and $4,200 a month for Azure API Management itself. The examples below use East US list prices, before add-ons and discounts.
| Scenario | Best-fit tier | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small public API, 3M calls a month | Consumption | About $7 | About $84 |
| Same, with a fixed SLA and room to grow | Basic v2 | $150 | $1,800 |
| Internal APIs, 30M calls a month, private backends | Standard v2 | $700 | $8,400 |
| Same, at 200M calls a month | Standard v2 | $1,075 | $12,900 |
| Private APIs inside your VNet, zone-redundant | Premium v2, 2 units | $4,200 | $50,400 |
| Hybrid: 1 Premium unit + 3 on-premises gateways | Premium (classic) | $3,545 | $42,540 |
| Two Azure regions, 1 unit each | Premium (classic) | About $4,193 | About $50,316 |
What do 10 billion calls a month cost?
On Premium or Premium v2, calls cost nothing extra; on Standard v2, they'd cost about $25,575 a month. A 2024 Reddit thread asked this exact question. The math:
- Standard v2: $700 + (9,950 million calls above the allowance × $2.50 per million) = about $25,575 a month.
- Premium v2: $2,800 a month plus extra units for peak traffic, with no per-call fee.
Ten billion calls a month averages about 3,860 requests a second. Microsoft's estimate for one classic Premium unit is about 4,000 requests a second, with no policies applied. Plan for at least two units to handle peaks.
At high volume, Premium becomes the cheaper tier. The break-even point between Standard v2 and Premium v2 sits at roughly 890 million calls a month.
How does Azure API Management pricing compare with other gateways?
Azure APIM pricing is one of the few fully public price lists among enterprise gateways. Most alternatives charge per call, sell annual subscriptions or quote privately. The right comparison depends on your traffic and how many clouds you run.
| Platform | Pricing model | Public prices? | Our pricing guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azure API Management | Per unit per hour, plus per-call on Consumption and v2 | Yes | This page |
| Google Apigee | Per-call fees by proxy type plus environment fees; extensible proxies cost 5x standard | Partly | Apigee pricing |
| Kong | Konnect Plus: from $25 a month per control plane, plus $200 per extra 1M requests; Enterprise by quote | Partly | Kong pricing |
| MuleSoft | Mule Credits plans from $2,000 a month, billed yearly | Partly | MuleSoft pricing |
| Tyk | Free open-source gateway; paid Core, Professional and Enterprise plans | Partly | Tyk pricing |

How do you reduce Azure API Management costs?
Most savings come from picking the right tier and not paying for features you don't use. Azure API Management offers no reserved-capacity discount, so tier choice and unit count are your main levers.
- Default to v2 tiers: Choose classic Premium only when you need multi-region or self-hosted gateways.
- Check the "VNet" requirement: If you only need to reach private backends, Standard v2's outbound integration avoids Premium.
- Use Consumption for small or spiky APIs: The first million calls each month are free.
- Run dev and test on Developer: At $48 a month, it's cheaper than a copy of your production tier.
- Use workspaces instead of extra instances: Premium includes five workspaces, so teams can share one instance.
- Size units to real traffic: Add units when capacity metrics show sustained load, not by default.
- Cache responses: Every tier except Consumption includes a built-in cache, from 10 MB on Developer to 5 GB on Premium.
- Sample your logs: Application Insights sampling cuts logging bills without losing trends.
- Cap AI token use: If you route AI traffic, token limits stop one app from running up your model bill.
- Recount your Premium features each quarter: Repeat the count at the top of this page. If a Premium instance uses no Premium-only feature, move it to Standard v2.
When is the Premium tax not worth paying?
The Premium tax is hardest to justify when you pay it only to run gateways outside Azure. If your APIs already live on several clouds or on-premises, stretching one Azure instance to cover them costs $3,045 a month or more, and ties every environment to Azure's control plane.
You're not alone in running more than one gateway. Postman's 2025 State of the API report found that 31% of organizations run more than one API gateway, and 11% run three or more.
An alternative is to keep Azure API Management on a v2 tier for your Azure APIs and let each other environment keep its own gateway. Teams using DigitalAPI govern Azure APIM, Apigee, Kong and AWS gateways from one catalog, connected with read-only credentials, so no single gateway has to stretch across every environment. Our guide to managing multiple API gateways without migration explains how.
Paying for Azure APIM Premium is worth it if:
• Your APIs must sit inside your own VNet with no public endpoint.
• You need multi-region or zone redundancy with a 99.99% SLA.
• You run more than about 890 million calls a month, where Premium v2 beats Standard v2 on price.
It's not worth it if:
• You pay for Premium only to reach private backends.
• You pay for Premium only to run gateways in other clouds or data centers.
• Your Premium instance uses none of the Premium-only features.

How much does the Azure API Management Consumption tier cost?
The Azure API Management Consumption tier has no base fee. It includes 1 million calls per subscription each month, then charges $3.50 per million calls in East US, as of October 2026. Some regions cost more, such as $4.25 per million in Southeast Asia. It has a 99.95% SLA.
How much does the Azure API Management Developer tier cost?
The Azure API Management Developer tier costs about $48 a month in East US. It includes most features, including VNet injection and a free self-hosted gateway with one replica. It has no SLA and supports only one unit, so it's meant for development and testing.
Why is Azure API Management Premium so expensive?
Azure API Management Premium costs about $2,795 a month because it bundles features other tiers lack: VNet injection, multi-region, availability zones, self-hosted gateways and workspace gateways. You pay the full price even if you need only one of them. This is often called the Premium tax.
How much does an Azure APIM self-hosted gateway cost?
An Azure APIM self-hosted gateway costs about $250 a month per gateway deployment on the classic Premium tier, plus the Premium unit of about $2,795. That makes a hybrid setup about $3,045 a month in East US. On the Developer tier, self-hosted gateways are free but limited to one replica.
Does Azure API Management charge per API call?
It depends on the tier. Consumption charges per call after the first million. Basic v2 and Standard v2 include 10 million and 50 million calls a month, then charge $3.00 and $2.50 per million. Premium v2 and the classic Developer, Basic, Standard and Premium tiers have no per-call fees.
Can I get a discount on Azure API Management?
Azure API Management isn't eligible for Azure Reservations or the Azure savings plan, as of October 2026. Discounts come through enterprise agreements. You can also cut costs by choosing v2 tiers, using Developer for non-production and sharing one instance across teams with workspaces.
How much will the Azure AI Gateway tier cost?
Microsoft hasn't published it yet. As of October 2026, Azure's pricing page lists an "API Management (AI Gateway tier)" with "Pricing details are coming soon." Today, AI gateway features run on existing tiers, and Basic v2 is free for up to 100,000 requests when created as an AI gateway in Microsoft Foundry.
Is there an Azure API Management pricing calculator?
Yes. The Azure Pricing Calculator includes API Management, and the official pricing page lists every tier. Check your region, since a few regions cost more. Remember to add Defender for APIs, logging, WAF and non-production environments, which the tier price doesn't include.
Final word
- Tier price: from $0 to about $2,800 a month per unit, with Standard v2 at $700 the common production choice.
- Premium tax: you pay it for one feature, so check which one you use.
- Hidden costs: security, logging, extra units and environments can add as much again.
- No reservations: tier choice and unit count are your only levers.
Start with the count at the top of this page. If a Premium instance has nothing next to it, that's your first saving. If your gateways span several clouds, govern them together instead of paying to stretch one.
