Sr. Principal, Product Manager - Agentic & Platform

Conduct is Smarsh's compliance platform for regulated financial institutions, and this role owns how it opens up to programmatic consumers. You will decide what the headless workflow, API and MCP surfaces look like, which contracts agents can invoke, how extensibility is documented and packaged, and where the line sits between the workflow layer agents talk to and the AI/ML intelligence layer underneath it. The brief is explicit that these contracts are product decisions, not something handed to engineering after the fact.
The second half of the mandate is platform readiness. Tier 1 banks put security, multi-tenancy, scale, performance and reliability through diligence before a deal closes, and this PM owns that non-functional roadmap. It is a senior IC position with no direct reports: you set direction, write the specs yourself, and lead through craft and influence while working alongside Engineering, Data Science, AI/ML, Professional Services and customer-facing teams.
What you will do
- Own roadmap and strategy for the agentic and platform side of Conduct: headless workflow, API and MCP surfaces serving people and AI agents through one workflow layer and a shared audit trail.
- Treat the API surface as a product, deciding how workflow configuration, reason-code taxonomies, review actions, alert queues and the contracts agents invoke should work, rather than leaving those calls to engineering.
- Shape the extensibility model for advanced customers and external or agentic systems, covering developer documentation and the packaging logic for what belongs in a subscription tier, what is usage-priced and what earns a premium.
- Work with the AI/ML product team to keep a clean boundary where agents call the workflow layer and the intelligence layer powers it from below.
- Own security, multi-tenancy, reliability, performance and scale as first-class product requirements, and convert the diligence and regulatory-exam bar of the largest banks into a non-functional roadmap you can defend.
- Write requirements for agentic workflows (automations, auto-sampling, analyst assist and review), all running on the same behavioural data and audit trail human analysts use.
- Make sure every agent action is recorded, explainable and defensible to the standard expected of an analyst's own decision, keeping the audit trail robust under regulatory examination.
- Partner with Engineering on capacity, release readiness and operational discipline, supplying specs complete enough to build from without a round of clarification.
- Work with Customer Experience, Professional Services, Data Science and AI/ML to turn customer pain into priorities, spend time with customers directly, and maintain differentiated positioning grounded in what the product really does.
- Define what good platform and API/MCP product craft looks like across the product team and mentor other PMs on agentic thinking, through influence rather than line management.
What the employer is looking for
- 10+ years in product management with a record of shipping products at enterprise scale.
- Proven ownership of extensibility layers or developer-facing API surfaces, treated as product decisions, with the specs to show for it.
- Direct ownership of non-functional requirements on products you shipped, where security, reliability, performance or scale sat with you rather than being delegated to engineering.
- Experience building for human users alongside programmatic or agentic consumers, or a strongly adjacent background; knowing MCP-style surfaces or agent frameworks counts in your favour.
- Enterprise SaaS experience in regulated industries, where a wrong output can create legal or regulatory exposure.
- A history of setting direction and standards that others adopted on the strength of your work, without holding formal reports.
- Strong writing across two distinct formats: specs that engineering builds from, and strategy papers that executives act on.
- Comfort in a cross-functional model where Engineering, Design and Data Science operate as peers rather than service teams.
Good to have
- Background in legal technology, compliance, financial services or another field where AI explainability and auditability are mandatory.
- Experience commercialising AI or ML capabilities, linking model performance to product value and then to pricing and packaging.
- Prior ownership of a product with both a UI and a developer-facing surface, and the different decision frameworks each demands.
- Exposure to MCP, bring-your-own-model or agent-framework extensibility handled as a product concern.
Benefits and compensation
- Medical, dental and vision insurance, plus a flexible spending account for pre-tax eligible expenses.
- Stock options.
- Flexible, take-what-you-need PTO and flexible work arrangements.
- 4% 401(k) match, fully vested from day one.
- Sabbatical programme available after six years of service.
- Peer-nominated employee recognition programme tied to company values.
About Smarsh
Smarsh builds Conduct, a compliance platform used by regulated financial institutions, including the largest Tier 1 banks, where the product has to clear diligence and regulatory examination. The company is now extending Conduct with API, MCP and headless surfaces so customers and AI agents can act on the same behavioural data and audit trail as human analysts. Employees get stock options, a vested 401(k) match, flexible time off and a sabbatical after six years.
Quick answers
Is this Smarsh product manager role remote?
Yes. The posting lists it as US remote and full-time. It is a senior individual-contributor role with no direct reports, so you lead through influence rather than managing a team.
What experience does Smarsh expect for this role?
At least 10 years of product management with enterprise-scale shipping, prior ownership of developer-facing API or extensibility surfaces, hands-on ownership of non-functional requirements, and enterprise SaaS experience in a regulated industry. Familiarity with MCP or agent frameworks is a plus.
What does the role pay?
The listed salary range is $220,000 to $240,000 per year, with stock options, a 4% 401(k) match vested from day one, flexible time off and a sabbatical after six years.

DigitalAPI's read on this role
Why this Agentic & Platform PM role matters in today's APIM market
DigitalAPI's leadership team has run API programmes for Fortune 100 companies and now builds the platform behind them. Here is their take on what this opening really asks for.
What this role says about the market
A compliance vendor hiring a principal PM to own its API and MCP surface is a clear signal: AI agents are now a first-class consumer of enterprise APIs, and that access has to be designed, documented, packaged and governed like any other product. The role also folds pricing and packaging into the API decision, which puts monetisation of programmatic access on the table, and it treats telemetry, reliability and security as product surfaces that must pass bank-grade diligence. That combination of agent-ready contracts, governance that holds up to regulators and a commercial model for developer access is what API programmes across financial services are being asked to deliver right now.
What to emphasise in your application
- A specific API or extensibility surface you defined as a product, with the spec you wrote and the decisions you made about contracts, versioning and packaging.
- Non-functional requirements you personally owned, ideally with evidence of how scale, reliability or security work moved a regulated deal through diligence.
- Any work serving both humans and programmatic or agentic clients, including MCP-style tool surfaces, agent frameworks or auditability of automated actions.
- Examples of leading through technical authority: standards or direction other PMs and engineers adopted without you holding a reporting line.
- Writing samples that show the difference between a buildable spec and an executive strategy document.
For hiring managers
DigitalAPI's leadership team would screen for candidates who can describe an API contract as a product promise with an audit trail behind it, not as an endpoint list. Ask how they would expose an agent-callable workflow without letting the intelligence layer leak into the contract, how they would decide what is tiered versus usage-priced, and how they would make an automated action explainable to a regulator. The strongest candidates will also treat multi-tenancy and reliability as roadmap items they defend, not tickets they forward.
In our view the developer portal, and now the MCP gateway in front of it, is where APIs become products that both people and agents can trust. This role is an early example of that shift landing inside a regulated SaaS platform.
About DigitalAPI
DigitalAPI is the gateway-agnostic command centre for APIs and AI agents. It connects to the gateways an enterprise already runs, Apigee, Kong, AWS API Gateway and Azure API Management, and turns everything behind them into one governed, self-serve catalogue for developers, partners and AI agents. API Gateway, API Portal, API Catalog, API Marketplace, MCP Gateway and MCP Portal ship as one platform.
The company grew out of an API consultancy founded in Bangalore in 2015 that became an Apigee-Google partner in 2017, then built its own cloud-agnostic, AI-powered platform in 2020 after seeing how fragmented gateways and duplicate APIs blocked its clients. More than 240 API teams now use it, with customers such as Zurich, Canara Bank, HSBC, Fiserv and Mahindra Finance. DigitalAPI has offices in the USA, UK and India, 130+ people, and recognition from Gartner and Deloitte.
