Principal Product Manager, HTS API Marketplace

Role overview
HTS (Hopper Technology Solutions) is the division through which airlines, banks, hotels and travel agencies plug Hopper's fintech and travel inventory into their own channels. The HTS API Marketplace will be the commercial, developer-facing front door to Hopper's lodging and car capabilities, and this Principal PM is the person who decides what it becomes. The underlying engines (connectivity orchestration, pricing and ranking, content mapping, the extranet) already have their own capability teams; your role is to work with those PMs and shape their systems into coherent, enterprise-ready API products with a pricing model, onboarding path and go-to-market plan.
This is genuinely 0-to-1. Hopper expects the hire to prototype before writing a PRD, using LLMs and vibe-coding tools to mock APIs, simulate partner portals and test pricing configurations ahead of any engineering commitment. You will work across Engineering, Data Science, Commercial, Finance and Supply, and you will own the marketplace revenue line, tracking GBV, take rate and unit economics per capability. The role is fully remote within the United States.
What you will do
- Decide what the HTS API Marketplace actually is: how a portfolio spanning HTS Connect, Search Polygons, Autocomplete, Ranking, Content & Property Mapping, Room Mapping, Deduplication/Auction, Pricing, Extranet, Taxes and the Custom Deals Engine gets grouped, bundled and priced.
- Work alongside the PMs who own each underlying system to learn their roadmaps, constraints and customisation options, then turn that knowledge into APIs external partners can consume.
- Set the commercial model for the marketplace, including platform-fee versus variable-fee choices, take-rate structure per capability, enterprise bundles, and a custom-deals framework for large partners with distinct customer segments.
- Stand up the developer and partner experience from zero: API specifications, onboarding flows, documentation conventions, sandbox environments and integration tooling that shorten time to first value.
- Prototype with AI tooling before engineering gets involved, for example mocked API responses, partner portal mock-ups, and simulated pricing and ranking configurations.
- Define the go-to-market motion with the Commercial team: match the right partners to each capability, sequence the launches, and agree what a successful rollout looks like.
- Run the marketplace P&L with Finance, modelling and tracking gross booking value, take rate and per-capability unit economics.
What the employer is looking for
- 7+ years in product management, including at least one product you took from initial concept through to commercial launch.
- Proven track record with developer-facing or B2B marketplace products, with direct ownership of API design, developer experience and enterprise packaging.
- An AI-native working style: LLMs and vibe coding are your default prototyping tools, and you have shipped working demos or proofs of concept that way before handing over to engineering.
- Solid understanding of marketplace economics, covering take rates, supply-side incentives, demand-side optimisation and the choice between platform and variable commercial models.
- Able to coordinate several product teams at once: pull roadmaps together, expose dependencies and drive alignment without owning the engineering yourself.
- Experience with external enterprise partners, turning their commercial asks into product requirements and managing expectations across phased rollouts.
- Comfortable in SQL and with large transactional or operational datasets.
- Excellent written and spoken communication, including the ability to produce crisp API and product documentation.
Good to have
- Background in travel commerce (lodging, cars, flights) or a neighbouring space such as fintech, advertising or marketplace infrastructure.
- Exposure to connectivity, distribution or supplier technology, for example GDS, channel managers or OTA APIs.
- Earlier career time in engineering, data science or another technical role.
- Familiarity with auction or deduplication mechanics, dynamic pricing, or recommendation and ranking models.
Benefits and compensation
- Competitive salary plus pre-IPO equity at a well-funded startup.
- Unlimited paid time off and a Carrot Cash travel stipend.
- On-demand co-working access through FlexDesk plus a work-from-home stipend.
- Parental leave described as well above industry norms.
- Medical, dental and vision coverage fully paid by the employer, plus disability and life insurance.
- Health Reimbursement Account, DCA/FSA and a 401(k) plan.
About Hopper
Hopper runs a consumer travel app and website alongside HTS, its B2B division, which now accounts for over 75% of the business. The company pairs a large travel agency with proprietary fintech products such as Cancel for Any Reason and Flight Disruption Assistance. Through HTS, partners including Capital One, Air Canada, Uber, CommBank and Nubank embed Hopper's fintech or inventory in their own channels. Hopper has raised more than $750M, has over 120 million app downloads, and is the third-largest online travel agency in North America.
Quick answers
Is the Principal Product Manager, HTS API Marketplace role remote?
Yes. Hopper lists it as fully remote within the United States.
How much experience does Hopper want for this API marketplace role?
At least seven years in product management, including one product taken from concept to commercial launch, plus hands-on work on developer-facing or B2B marketplace products.
Does this role require an engineering background?
No. Prior engineering, data science or technical experience is listed as a bonus, but SQL fluency and comfort prototyping with AI and vibe-coding tools are expected.

DigitalAPI's read on this role
Why an API Marketplace PM hire at Hopper is a signal for API monetisation
DigitalAPI's leadership team has run API programmes for Fortune 100 companies and now builds the platform behind them. Here is their take on what this opening really asks for.
What this role says about the market
Most API programmes still stop at publishing a catalogue. Hopper is hiring someone to go further and treat APIs as priced, packaged products with take rates, enterprise tiers and a revenue P&L. That is the API-monetisation and partner-marketplace pattern we see gaining ground in banking, insurance and travel: the portal and marketplace become the place where an API turns into a business line, and the PM who owns it has to think like a platform owner rather than an interface designer. The explicit demand for AI-first prototyping also reflects how quickly API product teams are expected to test pricing, documentation and onboarding ideas before engineering time is spent.
What to emphasise in your application
- A concrete example of an API or developer product you took from zero to paying customers, with the packaging and pricing decisions you made.
- How you designed developer experience end to end: specs, docs standards, sandbox environments and onboarding that reduced time to first call.
- Marketplace economics you have actually modelled: take rates, platform versus variable fees, per-capability unit economics.
- Demos or proofs of concept you built with LLM and vibe-coding tools before involving engineering.
- Evidence of coordinating multiple product teams and external enterprise partners through phased launches without owning the engineering.
For hiring managers
DigitalAPI's leadership team would screen for candidates who can explain how an API becomes a product rather than just an endpoint: who has written a pricing page, argued over a take rate, and watched partner onboarding metrics move. Ask how they would design the sandbox and documentation so an external partner reaches first value without a support ticket, and how they would keep the marketplace consistent when capabilities are owned by separate teams.
Our view is that the developer portal and marketplace is where API programmes prove their value, and this role is a textbook version of that thesis. Building it in a way that stays gateway-agnostic and ready for agent-driven consumers, not just human developers, is what will make it durable.
About DigitalAPI
DigitalAPI is the gateway-agnostic command centre for APIs and AI agents. It connects to the gateways an enterprise already runs, Apigee, Kong, AWS API Gateway and Azure API Management, and turns everything behind them into one governed, self-serve catalogue for developers, partners and AI agents. API Gateway, API Portal, API Catalog, API Marketplace, MCP Gateway and MCP Portal ship as one platform.
The company grew out of an API consultancy founded in Bangalore in 2015 that became an Apigee-Google partner in 2017, then built its own cloud-agnostic, AI-powered platform in 2020 after seeing how fragmented gateways and duplicate APIs blocked its clients. More than 240 API teams now use it, with customers such as Zurich, Canara Bank, HSBC, Fiserv and Mahindra Finance. DigitalAPI has offices in the USA, UK and India, 130+ people, and recognition from Gartner and Deloitte.
